Requirements for Orchestra
2005-2006 Season
- Have your own rosin. Do not use Pop's bass rosin. Instead,
Nyman's Swedish Rosin is a good buy that doesn't harm the
bows
- Bring a rag to clean your instrument and bow; it should
be made of a t-shirt like material.
- Have a mute
- Have a tuner made specifically for strings
- Have a metronome
A good place to buy these items would be Duffies, or the
Violin Shop. The Violin Shop is in Boca Raton, and they work
by appointment. Their phone number is Miami: 305-754-7663,
Boca: 561-391-0794, or toll free: 800-781-8155). Their website
is http://www.violinshopmiami.com.
They serve all string instruments, and their instruments can
be rented to be tried out.

- Do not at any time put scotch tape on your instrument's
board while cleaning it. This will ruin the board by fading
it, and leaving a gooey residue. If you have already done
this, you can remove the goo with Goo Gone.
- To get rosin off your strings, use rubbing alcohol on
a soft cloth. Do not get any of the rubbing alcohol on the
wood of your instrument, as it will harm it.
- After playing, use a soft cloth to clean off the rosin
on the wood and strings of your instrument. This is important
because the rosin can eat away at the wood. If your instrument
feels bumpy, use a wood floor cleaner called Oz, which is
sold at Constantine wood center. It costs about $8. Their
website is http://www.constantines.com.
- Do not touch the hair of your bow
- Do not keep on bridge down. Always bridge up.
YOU MUST KNOW THE FOLLOWING SCALES IN TWO OCTAVES WITH ARPEGGIOS:
C, G, D, A, F, Bb.
An example of a scale is
F scale: F G A Bb C D E F (with the arpeggio being F A C F)

Orchestra
Update from Miss L.
What a successful
year!! Orchestra, Full Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra have
performed over 5 concerts/events in its first year!!! We are
certainly proud and excited of our ensembles, and even more
so, anxious to get started again!! This summer has a few events
for us to get together and enjoy ourselves such as bowling,
Boomer's and more!! We hope everyone plans on attending.
Please check the
websites for updates every week and assignments for summer
practice. We need every musician to practice their scales
and tuning so the new year starts on the right foot. If anyone
needs an instrument for the summer call the music room phone
(754-322-1302) and leave a message.
p.s. I will be available in the band room from 10-4 starting
June 21st
